Good morning everyone. Both Chestnut-collared Longspurs are continuing right now. The bright male is much warier than the drab bird most often seen yesterday. Again, I recommend approaching from the south on CR 4033, meaning that you would need to start from CR 4038 (Mokane Rd). As you drive north on CR 4033, there will be a white pole on the left (west) side of the road. Go about 100 yards past that pole and scope the roadsides to the north. If you drive much further, you may flush the birds before you can see them, or else you will be parked too near to where they like to emerge from the fields. These birds are sometimes harassed and flushed off by territorial Horned Larks, but they do return to the roadsides.

Good birding,
Pete

I’ll go back out in the morning to try to help, so I can update the LIST with any new information. And, others may relocate the longspurs before me. I wanted to readvise that I think the best strategy is to approach from the south, meaning that, from MO-94, you should turn onto CR 4035 and then use CR 4038 (Mokane Road) to drive east to CR 4033. You can then slowly drive north on CR 4033 towards the location pin linked below. My sense is that, by approaching in this way, there’s less of a chance that you’ll inadvertently flush the birds into adjacent fields; in addition, the sun will be less of a hindrance.

There’s always a chance on weekdays that dump trucks will be using these roads, since there’s a barge loading site off of Mokane Road between CR 4035 and CR 4033. We’ll hope that tomorrow isn’t one of those days.

Here's this afternoon’s checklist with the exact location pin, photos of both birds, and an audio recording. The checklist also contains some speculation that the drabber bird may be an adult female:

One bird is right back in the road near the coordinates I provided. FromMO-94, I recommend taking CR 4035 to CR 4038 (Mokane Road), heading east on 4038 to CR 4033, and then taking CR 4033 north.

Update: There are actually two birds, both males, one bright, one comparatively drab. At the moment, they’ve flown into the field northwest of the coordinates I provided.

Thanks Chris. I’m watching as the bird picks grit from the roadway beside the western berm of CR 4033. Updated coordinates are 38.57203° N, 92.07898° W.

Peter Monacell asked to spread the word that Kevyn Wiskirchen has relocated the Chestnut-collared Longspur at previously reported location on CR4033 in Callaway Co. at about 3:40pm. Approximate coordinates: 38.573059, -92.078787
