Happy Spring to South Bay Birders,
On Sunday, 14 eager birders and native plant lovers gathered with FOUR leaders to see what was happen' at Lake Cunningham. The weather was just wonderful, not too hot, not too cold finally.....a Common Yellowthroat could be heard all the way to the parking lot as we gathered. Great-tailed Grackles were in fine raucous song while hanging out in a tree where the Tree Swallows were duking it out over a couple nest cavities. The north part of the lake near the marina produced two lovely Green Herons who rushed from over the lake to greet us. Ring-necked Ducks with some Buffleheads (how do they stay so clean white anyway?) dove and splashed around. Ruddy Ducks are coming into breeding condition with their turquoise-blue beaks with Snowy Egrets flying low over the water. In the Native Garden Yellow-rumped Warblers chipped here and there with one, and only one, Cedar Waxwing munching on Sycamore buds. Bushtits were collecting nesting material for a future home for their nestlings. Meanwhile Anna's Hummingbirds darted about, pausing on a perch to squeak, I mean sing. And, White-crowned and Golden-crowned Sparrows were eating everything in sight in preparation for their journey north.
Arvind Kumar provided knowledgeable comments about the native plants in the garden, Ashok provided much appreciated support, and Sarah is just a darn good co-leader! Here is the eBird list for this lovely day. https://ebird.org/checklist/S220328073
