Hello Sally and CV Birders,
My FOS sighting of a Rufous/Allen's hum was on the morning of 2/23. That
one didn't stick around long, only saw it twice, and it was too quick for me
to get photos. Although it was long enough for me to see that it was a
male.
My second sighting of this season was on 3/10, another male. Unlike the
first bird however, this one stuck around for more than a week. During that
time I got to watch it quite a bit and discovered that it had a unique style
of feeding from the feeders. Sometimes it fed in the traditional way, but
other times it would work the rim underneath the feeder. I've seen other
hums poke around under feeders before, but this one did it frequently. It
was pretty comical really, seemed like he was doing it the hard way. But
maybe he liked the challenge, who knows?

This is also the first all red-backed male noted in 25 years in Sacramento.
All others had a significant amount of green on the back.
