- Reported Mar 23, 2025 08:47 by Kevin Zimmer
- Atascadero Lake, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.6667256&<ll...>,-120.6667256 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S220411813 - Comments: "Compact small white heron with rich buff highlights in crown and on back; proportionately short, thick, yellow bill; tarsi and toes appeared blackish (no contrast between the two), and the irides appeared pale, but given the light and the distance, not to mention some intervening branches, these details were difficult to discern without a scope. This bird did appear to be oiled or otherwise stained blackish on the belly, and for the entire time of my observation (45 minutes plus), it remained perched in a bare tree, where it preened almost continuously. Distant record shot quality photos to follow."

- Comments: "I was out at the feed lots at Cal Poly, looking for tricolored blackbirds. I observed through my binoculars, a group of black birds on top of the roof of the open building that contains hay bales, next to the cattle pens. While looking through my binoculars, I observed what I believe to be a yellow headed blackbird. It had a yellow head on a black body and I observed white patches on their black wings. It was quite a distance away So my photos are not very good, but I will attach some."
