With the windy, unsettled weather, I did my birding today mostly from the car. Nothing unusual but at least 200 DC Cormorants seen across the lake from the Dillon marina was impressive. Probably 15-20+ Bonaparte’s Gulls with a few already sporting black heads. There were a few tree swallows there as well. Two immature bald eagles were mixing it up while flying over while I was checking out the beach.
I drove NR Road 7 on my way over to Blackhand Gorge and didn’t find much although 16 Wood Ducks in one group is probably the most Wood Ducks I’ve seen at one time. I heard Trumpeter Swans in the distance, but couldn’t spot them.
At the Toboso Wetlands I walked around a bit. A pair of Trumpeter Swans were there and I’m guessing it’s the pair that’s been nesting there the past couple years. A pair of Canada Geese have taken over the beaver lodge closest to the parking lot where the swans have nested in the past so they’ll have to find another spot. Several tree swallows were feeding low over the ponds. Along with a few mallards, there were 20 some Ring-necked ducks. I saw one winter-plumaged Yellow-rumped Warbler and a belted kingfisher flew over calling.
