Subject: [CT Birds] Two (fun) signs of spring this morning
There's signs of spring everywhere now, of course, but we were pleased to see two signs of spring this morning:
Observation # 1: a pair of Wood Ducks came to check out a hole in an oak tree in our front yard as a potential nesting site. The female spent several minutes looking into the hole and even went into the hole as best she could (only her tail was visible). The male perched on a branch a few feet above her. The nearest body of water to our house is about ¼ mile away, through the woods. But I've read that Wood Ducks prefer nesting sites away from the edge of the water. The ducklings drop out of the nest cavity to the ground when they are ready to fledge and then follow their mother to the water, walking through the woods. A treacherous journey to be sure. We'd be delighted to have Wood Ducks nesting in our yard, but we aren't sure the hole is deep enough.
Observation #2: A flock of turkeys were out in a field this morning fairly close to the road. There were 4 males displaying persistently while the females stood by looking at the displaying males. Turkeys are amazing creatures, and this early spring courtship behavior is interesting to watch.
Spring is a delight!
