Protocol: Stationary
<rspahn...> Comments: Sue and I drove over to look for some of the rarer finds, including Barnacle Goose. Found all but that species. Many Canada Geese on the pond and few other waterbirds. Did not try for a complete goose count. Just before noon a couple thousand more geese poured in from the north - nothing else detected with them in the air or scanning after landing. Other species of interest - 4 Greater White-fronted Goose hanging together, at one point 2 "Richardson's" Cackling Goose at same time, many what I term "intermediate" geese = subspecies Canada parvipes or Cackling taverneri (I have found no sure way to separate in the field), 1 "Blue" Snow Goose, and 1 Green-winged Teal. There was one other birder present scoping the pond, who aso did not locate Barnacle Goose while we were present. On the way out along the Lake Ontario Parkway we had a couple hundred Turkey Vultures getting up and heading East in groups of a few to 20+.
18 species (+1 other taxa)
Snow Goose 1 adult Blue morph
Greater White-fronted Goose 4 Birds together whole time when we saw them. Early swam by very close later at varied distances out in pond. All adults. Species has been reported in the area for some time. Orange bills, white on front of hed and horizontal white line along mid side made ID obvious. Have seen many over the years at several locations around the country. Including locally.
