Yes. Read the book and saw the movie.

If you have never read the old book, “Never Cry Wolf” by Farley Mowat, it’s a fun read. In it, he goes to live among the wolves in Northern Canada, and claims that they live mostly off of small rodents. He established that this was possible by surviving on them himself. This may have been more of a novel than the true story it was presented as but anyway, this reminded me of it.

That’s interesting! They must need to eat a lot of them to maintain themselves. The coyote that trotted through my yard looked a bit skinny.

I recall a presentation at a Huron Valley Sierra Club meeting on urban/suburban coyotes research in the Detroit metro region. The coyotes, based analyses of scat, were eating predominantly mice and voles. Talk was by a Wayne State U grad student who was studying coyotes for his PhD thesis. He also cited another study in the Chicago area with similar findings. John

Many years ago, my farmer roots had taught me that cats were indoors and outdoors. Two cats that came to us as strays, and had originally been outdoor only, continued to be indoor and outdoor; neither of them left the yard. Both went missing about the time the coyotes showed up in the neighborhood. Since then,, my cats have only been out on tethers are in their catio. , a compromise that is better for the cats and the chipmunks and the birds. We did have some feral cats, a couple that we caught and homed, and the rest are completely gone in the last two years. The sensible part knows they probably didn’t survive, but the hopeful part hopes that someone else took them in, though they were quite wild.

I saw coyotes clean out a feral colony in New Orleans years ago. Could be here they have a surfeit of choice and like you said , don’t want to risk injury We have rabbits up the wazoo.Sent from my iPhone

I keep hearing that Coyotes can (and do) take domestic cats but the ones I keep track of seem to have reached a truce of sorts. I have cameras on a suburban parcel where cats and coyotes routinely overlap by a matter of minutes. Can’t say I’ve ever seen them in the field of view at the same time but…it’s hard to believe they have never encountered each other. I HAVE seen coyotes and possums eating from the same food source at the same time with no apparent animosity. Weird. Maybe they have to be “trained” to recognize some prey as food? Maybe they’re just not hungry enough to risk injury. I suspect smaller things are the more sensible choice if they’re abundant enough? From: April Campbell <adc14...>

Subject: Re: [birders] Non-Bird Well, I have a love/ hate relationship with chipmunks. They love my gooseberries and will pick a bush clean leaving mw with a midden of gooseberry skins. On the other hand, I love watching their antics playing and sunning themselves. I had two last year, but the freral cat carried both of them off. It was pretty horrible seeing the cat with my chippie in its mouth. A new one is out and I haven seen the cat. A coyote ran into my yard yesterday, so the feral cat problem may come ti an end.

Nope, no chipmunk, although a huge woodchuck made an appearance and of course we have had red & fox squirrels all winter...
But I had a surprise tree frog appear among the overwintered houseplants in a cool room...

Other signs of Spring…Has anyone seen their first Chipmunks of the year yet? I keep waiting for ours to pop out of their burrow near the House. Last year, a female emerged and was seen with two offspring. The young ones were slightly smaller and were clearly new to the world. They slowly gained confidence in their surroundings and I was kind of hoping I’d gain their trust. Then one morning we saw their friendly “Mom” get carried off by a Hawk. Nothing seen or heard here yet this year.
