Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] Swainson's Hawk/Turkey Vulture Migration-Borrego Springs
This evening, Saturday March 15, at least 150-200 or more Swainson's hawks
descended into Borrego Springs. Tomorrow, Sunday March 16, with very light
wind, they will continue migrating north. We estimate lift-off between 8:30
and 9:30am. We will monitor the migration beginning at 8am from the
official count site 2.8 miles north of Palm Canyon Drive on DiGiorgio Rd.
Check In at the hawkwatch for best viewing locations.

This morning, Saturday March 15, 166 Swainson's Hawks migrated from Borrego
Springs. The number of migrating Swainson's hawks from February 22-March 15
is now at
764. The number of Turkey Vultures that have migrated is 273.

We monitor the migration of raptors from the official count site every day
from 8am-11am, February 22-April 15. Each evening (beginning 1 hour before
sunset) we meet on Borrego Valley Rd, 1.8 miles north of Palm Canyon Drive
to monitor hawks as they enter the valley. This is not the official count,
only an estimate.

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://bvaudubon.org/birding-resources/ .
