Hi all -
I led a walk this morning at Martial Cottle Park in San Jose. The park
was full of folks participating in a fun run, but that did not impact
some great moments with several species.
While the songbird variety was limited our morning started with a
fly-over of two *RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS*. We had *AMERICAN PIPPITS* in the
grass just north of the master garden and *WESTERN BLUEBIRDS* were found
throughout. A *GREAT-BLUE HERON* was hunting gophers and was incredibly
comfortable with all the activity at the park. We found an adult
*COOPER'S HAWK* enjoying a meal of what appeared to be a Rock Pigeon. We
walked under the bird and it would not leave its catch allowing for
great views. Three species of swallows were catching bugs.
*WESTERN MEADOWLARKS* and *SAY'S PHOEBES* were in area of the mustard
field north of the Edward Cottle picnic area. A *SAVANNAH SPARROW* and
*SONG SPARROW* were also here.
Looking to the west around 9:45 AM we watched a *GOLDEN EAGLE* flying
west with crowns and a *WHITE-TAILED KITE* escorting it out of the area.
