I am surprised this article does not mention Deicer ice melt. That is what
the consensus has been. This is not a plumage thing.
Not a very pretty human caused coloration for an owl that needs to blend in
to a white substrate. I prefer the all white ones.

The story should be how human pollutants harm wildlife and this is one
example.
