Subject: [Ohio-birds] Finally—Golden Eagle for OH!
Golden Eagle was pretty much a nemesis bird for me for Ohio. I’ve been to Wally Road numerous times as well as to the Wilds. Today I decided to chase the one reported near Killbuck. I looked for a while late morning without any luck, then went to find the White-winged Scoter on Clark Rd another birder told me about but I dipped on that, although I saw a nice variety of ducks & a large group of Sandhill Cranes, at least 40.
I looped back to the Prairie Ln Wetlands running into a couple other birders looking as well. There are very few places to pull off and I was looking for somewhere to turn around for another pass when a couple birders told me they had just seen it and where. I had missed it by about 5 minutes!
I looked for it for quite a while and just as I was about to give up around 2:45 I saw an adult Bald Eagle diving on what I thought was either another adult Bald or perhaps the imm Bald I’d seen earlier when suddenly the attacked bird moved off giving me clean looks: it was the juvenile Golden with prominent white at the base of its tail and white patches in the wings. It wasn’t super close, but i had decent scope views. Could even get a glimpse of the golden nape. Unfortunately, it chose at that moment to dive towards the trees and I lost sight of it amidst the trees. Perhaps it was on the hunt.
In addition to the juv Golden, i saw at least 3 Bald Eagles, 2 ads, 1 imm plus a pair of Red-taileds. Lots of TVs.
If you go, be aware that all the land appears private. Most is posted but not all—3 of us got shooed out from a pull-out that wasnt posted. The road has narrow shoulders & a fair amount of traffic esp trucks so be careful. Several pairs of Trumpeter Swans are around plus some N Pintails, Lesser Scaup & Com Merganser although it was difficult to do extensive scanning. A kingfisher flew over calling.
