Like you, I was surprised to see these buoyant animals going under for so long. I watched them do this at Menotomy Rocks one spring and finally decided they were diving for waterlogged acorns. Since then, when the acorns are fresh in the fall, I peel them with my pocket knife and feed the meats to the ducks. Many of them love it, but some don’t seem to realize it’s food. I guess they’re spoiled for Wonder Bread.

On Sunday afternoon at Horn Pond standing on a bridge I was very surprised to see a group of Mallards diving fully under the water. Just for 2 or 3 seconds, but completely below the surface. The internet tells me this is unusual but not unheard of. I had certainly never heard of it! Here’s a little movie clip:
