I hiked the length of Farren road this morning. Bird activity was pretty good (36 species found), but nothing particularly rare turned up. Orange-crowned Warblers and Common Yellowthroats were singing and there were still plenty of Yellow-rumps around. Missing were Scott's Orioles (no recent reports makes me think they have departed), Common Ground Dove, Roadrunner, and the Swallow flock that one usually expects near the reservoir this time of year.
Nice finds were a Red-breasted Sapsucker in the oak woodland and a "yellow-shafted" type Flicker in the eucalyptus grove at the end of the road. This Flicker was seen somewhat backlighted and distant, so I didn't get any decent views of the facial pattern; However, when it flew, instead of the usual salmon colored flash in the wings, in this bird it was a rather dull yellow or gold.
