I just drove over the Mile-long bridge and there are seemingly at least 200 eagles still on the ice, in the air, or in the trees along the Polk City end of the bridge. There were likely many more beyond my line of sight.

The ice is turning black, so this spectacle won’t last much longer.

Hi Ty,

You're welcome.

I counted birds in the photos and came up with 380 plus more to the North and in the air so I eBirded 400 and put that on the posts.

Still a big number.

This is the last photo of nine I took in sequence across the Eagles.

Thank you for posting so we knew about this Ty. I was able to walk out under the bridge from the Polk City sports field parking and get video and made a panoramic.

Yes, there are occasional groups of 5-6 eagles clustered in one spot, and am guessing they’ve spotted a winter-killed fish beneath the ice.

Wonder if higher degrees of winter fish kill (which is normal most of the time)........?? I was out at Raccoon River Park the other day and saw significant number of winter kill dead fish along a portion of the north shoreline with a smaller number of eagles out on ice edges dining.

Just drove across the Saylorville mile-long bridge. There is a remaining ice span, along the north side of the bridge, and I conservatively estimate there are 250 eagles scattered across the ice, like stars in the sky! There might even be 300. One can only take occasional glances while driving across the bridge, so an accurate count is not possible. The ice is going out quickly, so this may only last today and possibly tomorrow. It’s the largest eagle grouping I’ve ever seen..
