The "flats" as I call the shallows area between Cayuga RR bridge & Mud Lock, had countless nos. of ducks geese & swans, which, from their size & sleeping positions as we hasted to get to Ith. drs. appt., probably were Trumpeters. We took a side route & found a puffy, lingering snowy owl.
Until yesterday, I had not seen a single flying snow goose since last winter. That changed soon as we got to Seneca Falls & headed south. Sky was filled with flocks. Ah, such beauty as an occasional flock turned & the sun shone on their white undersides & black wingtips against the bit of blue sky!!! Back home in Union Springs at nearly dark, for the 1st time, a noisy, chatting flock of snows heading for Cayuga Lake flew low, directly over my head, but not by the thousands as in past yrs.. Ice cone had begun breaking up.
Taughannock was roaring in all its magnificence. Rarely do we not take a few moments to visit there as we have since 1961. The usual turkey vultures were soaring overhead but didn't see the nest-making ravens.
This a.m., my window sill feeder & the others were cleaned out by a large flock of starlings that flew soon as I raised my shade. Saw 1st 2 red wings here Tues.. The beautiful yellow-shafted flicker pair & red-bellied woodpecker pair & Cooper's hawk seem to have deserted me. Not missing the 3 deer that licked the windowsill feeder clean & learned to bump the feeders to knock out seeds.
Daughter, Becky, had a young bear cub run along her side yard & down into her neighbor's woods Sun. 3/2/25, 3.4 mi. east of me. THAT was a surprise. Couldn't get her phon out in time to get pix of it as it was running so fast but she took pix of the paw prints in the snow. Lansing Station Rd. had a sow & 4 cubs last wk..
