Yesterday-March 4-158 Swainson's Hawks migrated plus 169 Turkey Vultures Today-March 5-27 Swainson's Hawk migrated plus 11 Turkey Vultures Each spring (February 22nd-April 15) a team of hawkwatchers monitors raptor migration through Borrego Springs. The official count takes place every morning at 8am from a hill located 2.8 miles north of Palm Canyon Drive on DiGiorgio Rd. We track incoming hawks every evening at a site located 1.8 miles north of Palm Canyon Drive on Borrego Valley Rd. Visitors are welcome at both sites. Records of the past 23 years are available online at Hawkcount.org. Scroll down to Borrego Valley for our records.
This evening (March 5) at least 55 Swainson's entered the valley. They may be located at the Date Farm on Borrego Valley Rd. Tomorrow with a strong wind they may migrate out of the valley shortly after sunup. If the predicted rain develops they may remain in trees or go to ground near the Date Farm 1.8 miles north of Palm Canyon Rd. When more than 100 Swainson's Hawk arrive in the evening, an ALERT is sent to over 500 folks. The address to be added to the ALERT is <hawkwatchborregosprings...> Hal Cohen <Raptorhal3...>
