This happened to us at Pennyfield Lock a few years ago. Our car may have been accidentally left unlocked. Thief selectively stole several credit cards and cash, left everything else. Within an hour they had charged hundreds of dollars. MoCo police wouldn’t do anything because it’s federal property. You either have to wait for park police to show up, or drive to Virginia to file a report. This situation probably makes those lots more attractive to thieves because nothing is ever done.

Bummer. Am so paranoid when I go there now. A great place to 1st get an exer-walk/bird in along canal and then coming back to car, get my scope out and check the river. But these days, afraid to leave my scope or valuables in car because of theft. Ugh!

Just a heads up...between about 3:30 - 5pm tonight at Violette's Lock someone tried to break into my car - think my alarm went off and that stopped them, but the window will no longer close and the top of the door is dented. There were 2 cars in the lot when I arrived and 3 when I left. Such a shame that it is no longer safe to park at this lot...lots of song birds, herons, hawks and a small beaver hanging near the front area lately.
