Howdy Birders……
I am extremely happy to report that Lake Almaden has a Great Blue Heron chick in nest one that’s about 5 days old. That would mean she has other chicks that have hatched and I can’t see them yet. Last year this nest had three chicks.
This is great news for the field trip on Sunday. The new birders I hope will be as thrilled as I am. We will have four scopes for them to enjoy
Todays count
Great Blue Herons: 8 herons. 4 active nest with another possible nest being scouted.
Nest 1: is incubating. chicks due this week
Next 2: Has one chick I can see Should have others.
Nest 3: May have chicks as the due date is 4/6-4/9.
Nest 4. Is incubating and this nest is well hidden. Won’t see checks till they are 2 weeks old. Three chicks last year.
Black crowned Night Herons: 44 herons
I can see 8 nests. Others are deep in the bush.
Snowy Egrets: 6 not nesting yet
Great Egrets: 9. 3 are nesting. Mating occurred in focal nest 72 hours ago. We should have an egg now and hopefully more. This nest had 3 last year.
I did walk Around to check the island. Total species 32. Extremely wind and rather chilly
Tomorrow is clean up day at Lake Almaden. Please sign up to help out.
