I saw Bob McNulty‘s post after running some errands and decided to make a dash for it since there were a number of year birds for me on his list. I checked various places from the Spillway down to Red Bank Marina and not only got my three target birds but saw good numbers of various water fowl. My targets were Long-tailed Duck, Red-throated Loon and Tundra Swan, all of which are new for my year list. I’ve actually only seen Red-throated Loon once before in Ohio, so that was a treat especially after missing the one earlier this month in Carroll.
The loon and the swan weren’t particularly close, but I could see sufficient field marks through the scope to feel comfortable with the IDs. Thanks to Bob for posting & thx to other birders who told where the Long-tailed (boat ramp) & loon (Red Bank) were located. One tundra swan was swimming near the loon at Red Bank.
I believe I also saw a couple pairs of Greater Scaup, along with the much more numerous Lessers as their heads seemed much rounder & the bill much broader. That ID still vexes me.
Otherwise, I saw most of the waterfowl Bob listed for Hoover, so I won’t repeat them here. I missed Canvasback, N Shoveler & coot but I was concentrating on finding my target birds in the fading light. There were impressive numbers of Com Goldeneye and all three mergansers.
