Subject: [sbcobirding] 'Butcherbird' at NCOS
This morning Jim Hodgson and I observed a Loggerhead Shrike at NCOS feeding on a frog that had been impaled on barbed wire. This behavior has earned Shrikes the nickname “butcherbirds’. Besides being a way to manipulate and store food, displaying impaled prey items is thought to be use by male Shrikes to attract females.
