Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus) (1)
- Reported Feb 22, 2025 14:17 by John Callender
- 1426 Carnation Pl, Carpinteria US-CA (34.4052,-119.5231), Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-119.523136&<ll...>,-119.523136 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S214913397 - Comments: "Adult male seen at close range at a feeder. Solid rufous back from nape to tail with just a few flecks of green near the base of the wings."
Zone-tailed Hawk (Buteo albonotatus) (1)
- Reported Feb 22, 2025 12:23 by Noah Gaines
- Noah's House near LLC, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-119.8426241&<ll...>,-119.8426241 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S214901429 - Comments: "Seen circling overhead at med/far distance and then stooping out of sight. In sight for about 1 min. Seen with binoculars. Roughly the size and shape of a RTHA with obvious black and white barred tail. In fact, the bird looked pretty much like a dark morph RTHA except the tail was obviously barred black and white with 2 (ish) thick white bands. RTHA seen just before at similar distance. Dark underwing coverts and body and lighter flight feathers. Wings held at a slight dihedral, though I did not see the bird rocking like a TUVU. I was not able to detect the color of the feet or bill. The only other possible ID would be RSHA (shape is wrong for Coopers/sharp shinned). However no trace of buffy or rufous notes on undersides or uppers. The bird was not in great light, however I had several gulls fly by through the same air space and I was able to see their underwing pattern easily enough. Also, as the bird circled, I would expect to see some color on it at some point. No light crescent noted on uppers (all dark). However the light did shine through the flight feathers when viewed from below. Bird flew off towards airport."

Rufous crown, olive green sides, not shy. Under the bushes next to the road, came out and then flew into the pine tree. Observed with two other birders."
