I had the very good fortune of first meeting Helen Hays when she, Irv
Cantor and I did a day on the Bronx-Westchester Christmas Bird count around
1960. The highlight of the day was a red-headed woodpecker and good
conversations with Helen and Irv. We had no idea that in coming decades
Helen would become one of the most impactful ornithologists and
conservationists ever! We, her Terns, and her Great Gull Island helpers
were blessed to have her. Helen, we thank you and will never forget.
