I have my birdfeeders mounted from a 4x4 treated wood post. I recently noticed a Red Bellied Woodpecker repeatedly take a sunflower seed from the feeder and land on the 4x4 post to eat the seed. The woodpecker inserts the seed into a dime sized hole that it made in the post to better handle removal of the husk to get at the edible seed. I think this shows a high level of intelligence and tool making ability of the bird. Comments welcome.
