Date: 2/5/25 6:21 am From: Wentzel, Doug <djw105...> Subject: Fwd: PSO Webinar - Lights Out for Birds: Community Solutions to Avian Conservation
Greetings all,
Tomorrow night the Pennsylvania Society for Ornithology (PSO) is hosting a zoom webinar, with a couple of familiar faces. Joe Gyekis will host Matt Shumar (a Birding Cup teammate and former educator at Shaver’s Creek, and Matt provided an excellent program a few years ago for the club) for an update on the work he is doing on this important conservation topic.
Best,
Doug

> The expansion of urban areas poses significant threats to migratory birds, primarily due to light pollution and the extensive use of glass in modern architecture. Light pollution attracts birds into cities, where they often collide with glass windows, resulting in an estimated 1 billion bird deaths annually in the United States. Ohio Lights Out uses a collaborative approach to mitigate bird collisions by working with building owners, community members, and a network of organizations to make urban environments safer for migratory birds.

He was the Project Coordinator and co-editor for The Second Atlas of Breeding Birds in Ohio, and is Co-Director for the upcoming Ohio Bird Atlas 3. Matthew’s research interests include landscape ecology, and in particular, anthropogenic effects on Neotropical migrant songbirds. He is also interested in engaging the public into community science efforts and exploring new opportunities for collaborative efforts between academia, agency professionals, and amateur ecologists. Matthew also runs a private research station with a year-round bird banding program in southeastern Ohio with his wife, Molly, and is currently serving as President of the Association of Field Ornithologists <https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fafonet.org%2F&data=05%7C02%<7Cmerlin...>%7C2de55b42d892457b59a508dd43d40f75%7C7cf48d453ddb4389a9c1c115526eb52e%7C0%7C0%7C638741300270369314%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=rYz2le8D26KV%2Fn%2FOiLlBotEi6rgxAIuoW1xHaeNa%2Fpc%3D&reserved=0> , an international professional society dedicated to the study of birds and their habitats.
