Things here haven’t changed much with last week’s frigid weather except that it brought twice as many white -throated sparrows and juncos to the millet in the yard. Purple finches and tree sparrows continue in the front yard with the expected woodpeckers, chickadees (all of which look like black-cappeds), titmice, and nuthatches. But the most interesting thing going on in the yard right now is a territorial northern mockingbird. It’s been here all winter, having eaten all the purple beauty berries on a shrub in the yard. But now it’s chasing every other bird away from the bark butter mix I put in holes on the posts above the steps to the deck. Blue jays can’t even got to them or the peanuts we throw out on the deck each morning. This has been happening now for three days and I wish it would stop but we’ll see. Oh I forgot to mention that a field sparrow is now among the juncos.
