Seek and ye shall find. Shortly after sending the message below I was taking advantage of the good weather to split some wood. Shortly after starting a Red Tail came flying over. Then a ruckus over near the dam and it looked like most of the geese were up and flying caused by some disturbance. Along with the Geese came 11 swans. One swan landed on the hole in the ice that is in view from home along with 150 geese, 20 Mallards and a couple of Ring necks. I got out the scope and ID'd the swan as a Mute and found in scanning the opening a Redhead. We had to check for the other swans so drove to a view of the other holes. The first one we came across had no geese, a couple of Mallards and 35 Ring necks. Traveling around to a view of the other hole we noted a Red Shoulder working a carcass on the lake. Arriving on the other side of the hole we noted a few hundred geese, maybe a couple hundred Mallards, a couple of Ring Necks and 10 Mute Swans. While I had hoped for a swan without an asterisk the are infrequent here anymore. Certainly 11 swans was worth paying attention to. As a bonus on the drive back home we found a roost of 17 Black Vultures. I'll have to check the holes again to see what else might show up before the ice disappears.

As some of you know Lamb Lake is large enough and deep enough that it doesn't totally freeze even with the current weather. Currently there are three holes in the ice of about 5-10 acres total. Usually these holes yield a good diversity of water birds with species of duck goose and swan be the norm. Not this year. We have limited diversity as the list below shows. One of the holes has overnight primarily geese that leave in the AM and return at night. The other two holes have birds 24/7 as far as I can tell.
