This morning, I had probably two, but at least one, Red-necked Grebe where Nick reported 7 yesterday, about a half mile west of Gaviota State Park.
I birded the waters from the trailhead on the bluffs west nearly to the entrance to Hollister Ranch. Later, I drove back toward Goleta and stopped to bird from the bluffs on the east side of Canada San Onofre Beach. I didn't see much of interest besides the grebes. There are a lot of Common Loons around. One Parasitic Jaeger buzzed through while I was at Canada San Onofre. There were about 60 Surf Scoters hanging around between Gaviota State Beach and Hollister Ranch. The lack of grebes besides Red-necked is peculiar.
