I’m happy to announce a special speaker for L.A. Audubon’s next Zoom meeting. Scott Rashid is from Estes Park, Colorado, and he has a love of owls in common as well as with Nick and I. He has written a number of books on the montane birds of Colorado, including the subject of the talk he will be giving:

Scott has been studying small owls for more than 30 years. His presentation, "Small Mountain Owls" covers the natural history of the Northern Pygmy, Northern Saw-whet, Flammulated, and Boreal owls that inhabit the mountains of the west. During the presentation, he will be discussing species courtship activities, vocalizations, nest site preferences, preferred prey, egg laying, young, and post fledgling activities.
Scott has had Northern Pygmy-, Flammulated, and Northern Saw-whet owls nesting in the same tree in different years, which shows that in Colorado these three species have very similar nesting preferences.
During the presentation, the viewer will see Scott’s images and videos of owls at their nest holes, documenting the first ever Flammuated Owl and Boreal Owl nesting records for Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.
