Red-naped Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus nuchalis) (1)
- Reported Jan 22, 2025 09:19 by Nick & Jane
- Meadow Park--San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.6606531&<ll...>,-120.6606531 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S210298668 - Comments: "My guess is the same female I spotted last October, or a similar female. Seen flying from this tree where I saw a female Red-naped last year: (35.2679489, -120.6638104). This tree has lots of sapsucker holes and is from where it flew over my head fairly low, eastward into a short tree where it clung to a trunk at about eye height and gave a profile view. At first while flying I assumed the resident Red-breasted, but the bird was too pale, didnt have a bright red breast, or bright red head. The bird’s chin, while I can’t say how much red, wasn’t bordered fully by any thick black lines. If there was red on top of its head, I couldn’t fully tell how much though I believe there was red. Went to take a photo and the bird flew east into a tree, or through mid-park trees (where there is a bench). I checked that tree (a downy and nuttalls were in it) and every tree to the bridge, and circled the western area twice. Couldn’t refind. Other field marks include possible red crown, separated from its nape by a black bar. Its cheek was part of a thick black bar that extended from the lower crown through the eye and then became a black bar. It had a yellowy-brownish supercilium bar bordered both above and below by black, and below the eyeline bar had a thick yellowy-brownish-and white bar that curved inward toward the chest. The bottom black bar that extended at a downward angle from the lower mandible was also blackish. It had a large, thick white wingbar surrounded by black, though its primaries had black-and-white mottling. Its underside was yellowy-and-white along with black-mottling. The back was black-and-yellowy brown mottled. No vocalizations or drumming. No photo."
