Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] update on some continuing rarities in south county san diego 1-22-25
Elizabeth Copper and I resighted some of the continuing rarities in South SD County this morning:
Ovenbird - seen around 7:30 bobbing down the berm slope to the bases of the 2 myoporum N of the tall hedge along the N edge of the Coronado golf course maintenance yard.  Not sure if staff has decided to start enforcing no trespassing or if this individual was just having a bad day, but before I arrived Elizabeth was told by a staff person to leave the area and not enter beyond the edge of the street due to hazard from flying golfballs (this despite her being right at the end of the hedge where we've previously had multiple positive conversations with both golfers and staff).
Clay-colored sparrow - seen with its entourage of 4-5 chipping sparrows around 7:45 on slope adjacent to street just south of Coronado golf course maintenance yard.
(Eurasian wigeon was not in the pond NE of the clubhouse when we checked).
Scissor-tailed flycatcher - seen around 8:45 perched near top of tall deciduous tree in front yard of 253A & D Rancho Dr, Poggi Canyon area (W of recent ebird reports).  Note that there is construction activity going on on the street and tree/brush clearing in the canyon so parking is currently limited.
Greater peewee - seen around 9:45 on our second pass through the Hilltop Park, Chula Vista, perched on eucalyptus branch overhanging S walkway just E of W bridge (ie. lower end of the park).  Only heard to call briefly once.  Flew across to perch on yucca stalk and then back.  Note that a landscaping crew is currently thinning vegetation along the NW edges of the park, so very noisy at times.
(Gray catbird - not found when we looked late this morning south of Tijuana River Valley Bird & Butterfly Garden.  Note that vegetation in the area appears drier and thinner than it did in Dec, with apparent frost damage to the castorbeans in the area.  And to whoever felt the need to write in silver paint pen on the metal post at the trailhead "catbird" and dates, there are plenty of social media platforms for you to share your accomplishments; even if the post may appear ugly, don't deface public property!)

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://bvaudubon.org/birding-resources/ .
