Prompted by the near-absence of rain this season, I rode up Big Pine
this AM to learn a wee bit about how the winter offerings at the south
end of the Big Pine-San Rafael massif differ from the north end. Lists
are below; to summarize "highlights": I saw some White-headed
Woodpeckers, a few Cassin's Finches, good numbers of the 3 local flavors
of nuthatch, both Kinglets; no Solitaires, raptors, or quail. Not enough
winter data yet to say a great deal.
It was 17F/-8C (!) at Cox Flat at the bottom of the hill this morning,
but a bit above freezing at 2000 m elevation. Chokecherry Spring is
running well.
