The Summer/Fall 2024 issue of Connecticut Wildlife has a nice article, “Dedication for Don Hopkins: An advocate for CT’s bald eagles,” written by Kathy Herz. The article describes the recent addition of a memorial plaque to Don at the Peoples State Forest Nature Museum, as well as a wood carving of Bald Eagle attending young at the nest.
Kathy Herz writes, “Don wasn’t just an active birder with an interest in bald eagles. He founded the New England Hawk Watch in 1971 and the Bald Eagle Study Group in 1975. . . Don is credited with documenting the return of bald eagle nesting to Connecticut. In 1992, he located a nest in Barkhamsted, not far from Peoples State Forest, which was the first documented eagle nest in the state in over 40 years.”
Don Hopkins received the Mabel Osgood Wright Award from the Connecticut Ornithological Association in 1994. The presentation of the award was made by Neil Currie, former president of COA and a long-time friend of Don’s, at the COA annual meeting in March of that year. The April 1994 issue of The Connecticut Warbler carries the full text of this presentation. In it, Neil wrote, “Most importantly, through your work in organizing and maintaining the New England Hawk Watch, hundreds of birders in New England and in Connecticut have become aware of the inspiring spectacle of migrating hawks. Don, you started it all. For all of this, the Connecticut Ornithological Association is honored to award to you The Mabel Osgood Wright Award for 1994.”
