This morning, I left the house and heard a phoebe - a darn good January bird. Then I realized it was one of a flock of starlings in the yard. Then it or another did a not-as-good Least Flycatcher. While birding in RI, I heard a call repeated several times from great distance. It was in volume and tone closest to Evening Grosbeak, but not quite right. Later I head what sounded like something odd a titmouse would do if it were larger. Finally, at the town dock in Noank. I heard some raucous calling like a mixture of gull and loon. It was several Long-tailed Ducks in flight. They landed and continued calling. This set off other Long-tailed Ducks further north in Mystic Harbor, creating quite a ruckus in contrast with the previous quiet of pre-storm Sound.
