I have also just seen a Northern Flicker in my yard for the first time during the Winter (December and January). Not a daily visitor but I have seen it more than once. Its also the first time I have seen them visit my feeders, usually they dig in the ground for ants, but it makes sense that they are visiting the feeders in the Winter since the ground is frozen.

Hi Bob,

Your question is a good one that others can benefit from, so I am answering to the list.  Down here along the shoreline, we see Flickers year-round, but they are found in greater numbers in the spring and fall as non-locals migrate through.  This time of year, there are not too many around but they are still here.

A great tool to check on bird occurrence is the Bar Chart tool in eBird.  You can look up the state of Connecticut and get to the granularity of the county or even hotspot level.  Here is a link:

A useful booklet, including bar charts and much interesting info. was also issued by the Connecticut Ornithological Association.  It is called ‘Connecticut Birds - Distribution and Status by Season’ and it was compiled by our own Frank Gallo.  COA members received the book in January 2023…a great benefit of membership!

I believe that these books are still available for purchase – I hope someone from the COA can reply to confirm.

If that’s not enough, Frank Gallo’s book called ‘Birding Connecticut’ also has occurrence info!

These are all great resources for every birder to know what birds may be around and to help understand whether a particular sighting is unusual.

Good birding,
