Blue-winged x Cinnamon Teal (hybrid) (Spatula discors x cyanoptera) (1)
- Reported Jan 15, 2025 12:29 by Andrew Fleming
- Sweet Springs Nature Preserve, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.8422726&<ll...>,-120.8422726 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S209427714 - Comments: "Continuing bird. Cinnamon body with dark head and vertical white stripe in front of eye on both sides of head. In a group of blue wing teals in the marsh area."
Barrow's Goldeneye (Bucephala islandica) (1)
- Reported Jan 15, 2025 07:23 by Pair of Wing-Nuts
- San Luis Obispo Creek Lagoon, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.7364416&<ll...>,-120.7364416 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S209452397 - Media: 3 Photos
- Comments: "Continuing female (Virginia and Barry Langdon-Lassange 1-13-25) was darker gray on back with lighter gray sides and breast, dark brown head with thick, fluffy nape feathering, striking yellow eye, steep forehead to yellow bill that was blotchy brown at the base with a dark tip. Initially difficult to locate due to high tide conditions that allowed seals access to hunt up and down the creek and cause the goldeneye flocks to frequently relocate. The bird was ultimately observed swimming from west lagoon to the east towards western-most golf cart only bridge with mixed flock of Common Goldeneyes and American Coots."
Tropical Kingbird (Tyrannus melancholicus) (1)
- Reported Jan 15, 2025 11:50 by Steven McMasters
- Laguna Lake, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.6903817&<ll...>,-120.6903817 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S209426915 - Comments: "Continuing bird. At the grassy area with picnic tables by 1st boat dock. Yellow belly and chest. Large bill. Vocalized frequently, especially when chasing or being chased by nearby Western bluebirds or Cassin's kingbird.
WARNING: There is an active ground dwelling hornet nest in the same area near the old stump. These can be more aggressive and more painful than our usual late summer "meat bees". It is advisable not to step on or too near their hole (in my experience). I did not have anything to mark the hole but will try and relocate if I have time and mark with a pin flag. Otherwise...give the stump area a wide berth and keep your eyes open...especially if leading a group."
