First off, in minor news, yesterday there was a new Nashville Warbler at Lauderbach Park in Chula Vista and a "Slate-colored" Junco at Memorial Park also in Chula Vista (possibly the same bird from nearby Friendship Park last month). Today, the 15th, continuing Tricolored Heron, imm. Neotropic Cormorant, and single-site high 5 Reddish Egrets at Famosa Slough.
If anyone is keeping track, we have had SEVEN Hepatic Tanagers in the county this season: pair in Tierrasanta, pair in Fallbrook, singles at Wing Street Canyon and at San Dieguito County Park, and, the most recent addition, a female-type found on 2 January by (visiting?) birder William Rockey at Presidio Park. This bird appears to show up mid-to-late morning at the bottom end of the hillside lawn area, as follows: Park in the parking lot across the road just immediately below the Presidio building itself and walk straight out onto the lawn area with scattered trees. First on your right is an olive tree, then a couple pines, then a somewhat scraggly eucalyptus with some remaining whitish flowers, and then a large ficus tree. The tanager moves back and forth among all these several trees, and today I saw it several times between 9:45-10:45AM. Like a number of Hepatics, once it lands, it often quickly hides! So, it is a bit sneaky. Also seen here just once during this hour was a continuing adult male Summer Tanager. Mediocre photos of the Hepatic in my eBird list.
