Jack & Carol my Great Horned Owls are running late this year. I was starting to get worried. Last weekend I heard a gunshot in the middle of the night. I have neighbors across the creek that have chickens and I was afraid Jack or Carol might have been shot. Thankfully I was wrong or they were bad shots. Anyway, I guess since this is the eighth year for them to nest in a barrel they know how safe it is and don't have the need to roost early. They have never laid eggs in January. Always the first week of February. In this video you will see Jack come in first. He will hoot and you will hear Carol reply in her higher voice. Jack leaves and Carol will fly to her usual branch just out of sight and then down to the barrel edge. She still isn't getting into the barrel. She doesn't seem to complain about how tidy the barrel is so I'm not sure what the holdup is. Once Carol flies away you will hear both owls. Jack with the deeper voice lovingly cooing, almost purring. He didn't sound excited so I think it might be a bit longer before Carol starts the Big Sit and lays an egg. Wish I'd taken the time to move my 360 cam two feet to the west so Carol could be seen clearly from the branch she flies to. That cam is on a 16' 4x4 and it was scary putting the cam on top. Any more I'm so afraid of falling. I love climbing trees but not fond of climbing ladders. Hope you enjoy seeing Jack & Carol.
