Since HMBird members have binoculars and often have spotting scopes, and
the skies may be at least partially clear, I thought it was worth
posting that the Moon will move in front of and hide (occult) Mars
tonight. The full Moon is rising now and bright, reddish Mars is not far
away. By the time the sky is dark and the Moon is closer to Mars, it
will get increasingly difficult to see Mars by see by eye alone.
Just after 9:20 P.M. EST tonight, January 3, the Moon will start moving
in front of Mars. In less than a minute Mars will be completely hidden
by the Moon.
Mars will emerge from behind the Moon around 10:36 P.M.
