Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] More orioles & tanagers, Black Scoters
Monday the 13th, around 8-8:30 AM or so, the two blooming coral trees on the back edge of the Grape Street Dog Park along the east side of Balboa Park was a hotbed of oriole and tanager activity. A total of FIVE Bullock's Orioles (1 adult male, 2 immature males, 2 females), a continuing adult male Summer Tanager, and a continuing Western Tanager. In nearby South Park, a Western Flycatcher was at the edge of the little canyon at the east end of Fir Street (where there was a Summer Tanager during Nov-Dec), and one block's worth of tipus along Fern Street contained some 9 Townsend's Warblers--a good localized total for San Diego, and showing how much this species likes buggy tipus.

Yesterday there were 2 continuing Summer Tanagers in Coronado. And three Black Scoters (1 adult male, 2 females) continue together on South San Diego Bay in their usual stretch somewhere between Coronado Cays (west side) and Chula Vista (east side). One needs a good scope and lots of scanning patience! Scan from either the end of Grand Caribe in Coronado Cays or from Chula Vista Bayside Park in Chula Vista. Which side is closer to the birds varies from day to day, but I'd say the chances favor Grand Caribe.

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://bvaudubon.org/birding-resources/ .
