I went back out to my feeders for some more photography the day after the snowstorm (10 Jan). It was bright with large clumps of snow falling off of the tree branches. When it did this close to the feeder area, the birds would blast away in a panic, but within a few minutes, they'd be right back again. The ambient temps were in the 40's, but there was a northerly wind and I got colder than the previous day in the snowstorm. All the routine species were present: Northern Cardinal, American Goldfinch, Dark-eyed Junco (lots of them bouncing around on top of the snow), Purple Finch (male with leucism and a first for me), Carolina Chickadee, House Finch, and Red-bellied Woodpecker. There was a pair of red-bellies, and they were constantly calling to each other and taking turns coming to the feeders. The male always landed on the suet, but the female only went to the black-oil sunflower seeds.
