We had some pretty wild winter weather back in first part of January 2010. I was young enough then I doubted anything couldn’t really kill me, so I took off from Fayetteville and spent a winter day driving slick, snowy roads and dodging poultry feed trucks in western Benton County around Maysville.
One of the big outcomes from that day was seeing flocks of American Tree Sparrows along the roads and on fences. I saw several hundred that day, a very good record for Northwest Arkansas City. I was up there yesterday and saw several, but only one really well, and no flocks. Most of the roadside birds were Savannah Sparrows, meadowlarks, and starlings. The only American Tree Sparrow I saw well was on Tucker Road.
