I counted 63 evening grosbeaks in the maple trees by our home on Friday morning in Jefferson. They were noisily waiting for me to clear the snow off their platform feeders. We picked up 12 inches of new snow in the past five days, but we have no base, so the xc skiing is still marginal here. Friends in Bethlehem have 30 evening grosbeaks, and a friend in Lyndonville, VT has around 70 and he said he has gone through his eight 40 pound bags of sunflower seeds. We are typically getting a dozen species each day at our feeders but only the evening grosbeaks and a similar number of goldfinches are in big numbers. We also have 9 Tree Sparrows, 1 Brown Creeper, but only 1 Junco. I am lucky to see four species out in the woods on walks.
