Subject: [birders] Non-Bird (Fish)
Since I was a kid, I was aware the Michigan DNR was involved in breeding and releasing fry or smolt or minnows or fingerlings (or whatever) into the Great Lakes. This was (apparently) to serve the interests of commercial fisheries and sports-anglers. Since the lakes provide enough resources for these fish to grow much larger…my question is…why do they not create their own stable breeding populations? Are the fish being added some kind of GMO version that can’t breed just to keep breeders perpetually employed as some seed producers are? If this were the equivalent of government dumping five acres-worth of mature corn stalks into a one acre field to feed a neighborhood of adjacent property owners I’d understand but…they are not stocking with fully-grown fish if you get my meaning.
