I checked for the bird for about an hour starting at 7 a.m. with no success. I went back shortly before 11 a.m. to find that park workers were trimming the bottlebrush hedge with power cutters, etc. They had not reached the point where the Thrasher is most often seen during the time I was there, but it looked like they were going to do the whole thing. What effect this will have on future viewing may not be good.
On the second visit, another birder was checking the street side of the hedge while I was on the park side. He called to me that he was getting glimpses of the Thrasher from his side, but I could not see it. Then movement stopped and we waited. After a couple of minutes, a bird suddenly popped out of the hedge and flew across the street so fast that neither one of us got a good look at it, but what I saw suggested it was a Thrasher.
