I want to summarize the information about the Dusky-capped Flycatcher in Carlsbad. The bird was found during the Oceanside/Carlsbad CBC by Gjon Hazard on 29DEC2024 in a business area off Fleet Street. He provided a thorough description with photos and audio in Ebird and the SD Listserve. He also included the exact location and potential business sensitivities.
Despite multiple attempts (including same day searches), the bird was not seen again until this morning. A group of us were able to follow the bird around a bit to get a better understanding of foraging range.
Gjon found bird here on 29DEC24 : 33.129342960, -117.3157106129
Refound bird today on 5JAN25: 33.128708807, -117.3168669073
Moved to here: 33.129361805, -117.3170896941
Then here: 33.130044480, -117.3167757672
Then it flew off in direction of where Gjon found bird, but did not see it land.
The bird stayed at each location on average of ~20-30 minutes. So the good news is that bird is still around and is very cooperative. The bad news is that it's foraging route could take hours.
Another important note about the location. I consider this a weekend only location. On weekends the parking lots are generally open and the area is pretty quiet since people are not working on weekends.
I hope this information is helpful.

Carlsbad, CA
