Subject: [OrangeCountyBirding] Update on HCP-east city council vote
OC bird community

At last nights Huntington Beach city council meeting, the council pulled the HCP-east planned item off the agenda that would have taken over a large green space area for a fenced and bleachers area hosting a nightly LED show (the proposed area is north of the island and south of Lorens gulch, and stretches from Talbert lake on the west to the path below the Gothard parking lot )

It appears the city received a substantive amount of citizen feedback ahead of the meeting.

At the meeting, many public comment speakers criticized the idea citing environmental concerns on the wildlife, parking concerns, nightly shows till 11pm, and the taking of green space for commercial use. In addition a number of speakers cited the lack of the council seeking formal public approval for this type of HCP usage change (in accordance with the requirments of Measure C). There were no speakers that supported the HCP-east idea.

Based on the feedback, I expect this idea may be redirected to another city location, or will require substantial community agreement to go forward in Huntington Central Park
