Subject: Participate in the PA Winter Bird Atlas
The first season of winter surveys for Pennsylvania’s Third Bird Atlas
<https://ebird.org/atlaspa/about/about-2/> is currently underway, and more
help is needed. Winter Bird Atlas surveys will provide current information
on the distribution and abundance of birds that winter in the state.

Good news – it’s easy to participate in the Winter Atlas
<https://ebird.org/atlaspa/about/winter-atlas/>, especially if you already
use eBird! All birders are encouraged to submit data from anywhere in the
state from now through February 28, 2025.

To participate:

1. If you haven’t already, sign up for an eBird
<https://ebird.org/about> account and follow eBird best practices
<https://support.ebird.org/en/support/solutions/articles/48000795623-ebird-rules-and-best-practices>
.

2. Submit your data through the Pennsylvania Bird Atlas portal. If you
use the eBird mobile app, switch to the portal in the Settings
(instructions here
<https://ebird.org/atlaspa/about/using-the-pennsylvania-bird-atlas-portal/>).
If you submit checklists through a web browser, enter them here:
https://ebird.org/atlaspa/submit.

3. Whether conducting stationary

or traveling
<https://support.ebird.org/en/support/solutions/articles/48000950859-guide-to-ebird-protocols#anchorTraveling>
checklists, whether birding in your yard, an urban area, or a natural area
– all data are useful! Incidental
<https://support.ebird.org/en/support/solutions/articles/48000950859-guide-to-ebird-protocols#anchorIncidental>
checklists are useful for submitting an interesting species you observe
while driving or doing something other than birding.

4. When conducting traveling checklists in eBird, be sure to start new
checklists frequently to ensure that you only submit birds from within a
single block <https://ebird.org/atlaspa/about/atlas-blocks> on each
checklist. If you’re using the mobile app, eBird will give you a warning
that you are about to cross into a new block which is your notice to start
a new checklist.

Regardless of how or where you watch birds in PA this winter, you can add
data to the Winter Bird Atlas and contribute to bird conservation in
Pennsylvania!
