I know screech owls are common, but even after 40+ years of birding I still get excited when one visits a box in the yard. I first saw the gray phase screech at 4:10 today, but only because I was looking at a squirrel and nonchalantly panned over to the box, I've been looking at it for weeks with nothing in it but an occasional squirrel or in-and-out house finches. Obviously, though, today or last night or whenever the owl won. And obviously I have no idea if it'll be there tomorrow. I stayed out on the deck until it was almost too dark to see the opening but it was still there at 5:00.Other species seen here recently in addition to all the common ones include a kingfisher along the creek, both ruby-crowned and golden-crowned kinglets, purple finches, and fox and tree sparrows. Also, right before I saw the owl a sharpie strafed the yard but continued on down into the fields.
