Thanks for noticing the injury - which wasn’t apparent in my more distant
photos. The bird appears to have an injury either to its eye or just behind
its eye, (which, it’s hard to tell).
It’s possible the globe (eye) could be ruptured, if what appears to be
clear gel on its face is vitreous humor. If that’s the case, the bird may
be functionally blind in that eye. If the bird is weak enough, someone with
a kayak could possibly urge it closer to someone waiting on shore, to
attempt a rescue.
